Hughenden Terrace, Glasgow
Our client had lived in this generous ground-floor apartment on a grand Grade B-listed Victorian terrace for 10 years and had beautifully developed the property in that time. With just one area remaining untouched, we were brought on board to help the client complete the project.
A small dark kitchen with no dining space felt out of balance with the property and didn’t lend itself to entertaining family and friends. In addition, the new challenge of accommodating home working needed to be resolved. The design solution had to be sympathetic to the listed status of the building and its position within the Glasgow West Conservation Area.
The concept was to adapt the rear annex of the terrace and create an infill extension, with a large opening formed in the back wall to allow the kitchen to flow into the extension. Following the existing roofline created an opportunity to bring light into the property through a large rooflight, which would bring light into the kitchen and the newly formed mezzanine office. A large set of bi-folding doors allows the dining space to be opened entirely to the garden to make the most of the morning sun.
Kitchen-living spaces are often the hardest working spaces of a home, and this project is no different. With rooflights flooding light into the new kitchen and a large dining space looking into the garden, a counterpoint has been found to balance the large traditionally proportioned spaces at the front of the house and create a more joyful and practical living experience.
